Add 10:30 in winter, 9:30 in summer#

To turn a US Eastern time into India time, add 10 hours 30 minutes while New York is on Eastern Standard Time, and 9 hours 30 minutes while it is on Eastern Daylight Time. India stays on UTC+5:30 all year, so the number you add depends only on what New York's clock is doing.

On Friday, October 9, 2026, New York is on daylight time, so India is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead. The gap grows to 10 hours 30 minutes on Sunday, November 1, 2026 (rules as of October 2026).

At 9:00 AM on Thursday, January 15, 2026, in New York (EST), it is 7:30 PM the same day in India. At 9:00 AM on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 (EDT), it is 6:30 PM. Adding the offset can also carry you past midnight: 5:00 PM on January 15 in New York is 3:30 AM on Friday, January 16, in India. New York times from 1:30 PM EST (2:30 PM EDT) onward fall on India's next date.

EST to IST conversion chart#

Use the winter column when New York is on EST and the summer column when it is on EDT (switch dates are below). The times were computed for January 15 and July 15, 2026. "+1 day" means the next calendar day in India.

New York timeIndia in winter (EST, add 10:30)India in summer (EDT, add 9:30)
8:00 AM6:30 PM5:30 PM
9:00 AM7:30 PM6:30 PM
10:00 AM8:30 PM7:30 PM
12:00 noon10:30 PM9:30 PM

5:00 PM3:30 AM (+1 day)2:30 AM (+1 day)
8:00 PM6:30 AM (+1 day)5:30 AM (+1 day)

So 9 AM, noon and 5 PM in New York are 7:30 PM, 10:30 PM and 3:30 AM the next day in India in winter, and one hour earlier on India's clock in summer.

The EST to IST page shows both clocks live and the next date the difference changes.

Going the other way: IST to EST#

Subtract 10 hours 30 minutes in winter and 9 hours 30 minutes in summer. Early-morning times in India land on the previous day in New York.

India timeNew York in winter (EST)New York in summer (EDT)

So 9:00 AM on Thursday, January 15, in India is 10:30 PM on Wednesday, January 14, in New York. How to Convert Time Between Time Zones, Step by Step (With Examples) gives a method that works for any pair of places.

Why the gap changes: only New York moves#

Eastern Time is UTC-5 in winter (EST) and UTC-4 in summer (EDT). US federal law sets daylight saving time from 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday in March to 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday in November (15 U.S.C. § 260a, as summarized by the Congressional Research Service). The dates below come from the IANA time zone database. How Daylight Saving Time Works, Why It Exists and Who Still Uses It explains the mechanism and EST vs EDT: What's the Difference, and Which One Is It Right Now? covers the two names.

India does not change its clock, so every time New York moves an hour, the gap moves with it.

What India Standard Time is, and why it is UTC+5:30#

India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 and has no daylight time, according to timeanddate.com, and the IANA data shows no change to Kolkata's offset in 2026 or 2027. Timelive lists 262 Indian cities and all of them use one zone, Asia/Kolkata.

The half hour comes from longitude. According to New World Encyclopedia and Live History India, IST is set from the 82.5 degrees east meridian. The Earth turns 15 degrees an hour, so 82.5 degrees is 82.5 / 15 = 5.5 hours ahead of Greenwich. Why India Is UTC+5:30: Half-Hour and 45-Minute Time Zones tells the longer story.

Planning a call between New York and India#

Ordinary working days in the two places do not overlap. A 9 to 5 day in New York is 7:30 PM to 3:30 AM in India in winter and 6:30 PM to 2:30 AM in summer. A 9 AM to 6 PM day in India is over by 7:30 AM in New York in winter and 8:30 AM in summer, before the New York day begins.

That leaves two stretched slots:

  • New York morning, India evening. 8:00 to 10:00 AM in New York is 6:30 to 8:30 PM in India in winter, 5:30 to 7:30 PM in summer.
  • New York evening, India early morning. 8:00 to 10:00 PM in New York is 6:30 to 8:30 AM the next day in India in winter, 5:30 to 7:30 AM in summer.

Rotate the awkward slot between the two sides, and write the invitation with both cities and the date: "Thursday, January 15, 2026, 9:00 AM New York, 7:30 PM India (14:00 UTC)." See Best Meeting Times for US, Europe and India Teams (Winter and Summer Overlap Tables) and How to Schedule a Meeting Across Time Zones: A 6-Step Checklist for more.

A recurring call hides one trap. A weekly call set for 9:00 AM New York time is 7:30 PM in India on Monday, March 2, 2026, and 6:30 PM on Monday, March 9, the day after New York's clocks moved. To keep India at 7:30 PM, the New York time has to move to 10:00 AM. Decide which side keeps the fixed time, because the other side shifts by an hour twice a year.

IST and EST can both mislead#

IST is the short form of three zone names: India Standard Time (UTC+5:30 all year), Irish Standard Time (Ireland's summer clock, UTC+1) and Israel Standard Time (Israel's winter clock, UTC+2). Timelive's own pages label all three IST: Kolkata all year, Dublin in summer and Jerusalem in winter.

The readings can be hours apart. On July 15, 2026, 10:00 in India is 05:30 in Dublin, while 10:00 Irish Standard Time is 14:30 in India. IST, CST, PST: Why Time Zone Abbreviations Mean Different Things covers more clashes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the time difference between EST and IST?

India Standard Time (UTC+5:30) is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead of Eastern Standard Time (UTC-5). While New York is on Eastern Daylight Time (UTC-4), from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, the difference is 9 hours 30 minutes.

In 2026 the 9 h 30 min gap runs from March 8 until the early morning of November 1. IST never changes, so the gap moves only when the US changes its clocks.

What is 9 AM EST in IST?

9:00 AM EST is 7:30 PM IST on the same day: EST is UTC-5, so 9:00 AM is 14:00 UTC, and India adds 5 hours 30 minutes.

If you mean 9:00 AM on New York's clock during daylight time, it is 6:30 PM IST, because 9:00 AM EDT is 13:00 UTC.

How do I convert IST to EST?

Subtract 10 hours 30 minutes in winter or 9 hours 30 minutes in summer, and move back a day if the result is below 00:00. 8:00 PM IST on January 15, 2026, is 9:30 AM EST the same day, and 9:00 AM IST is 10:30 PM EST on January 14. In July, 8:00 PM IST is 10:30 AM EDT.

Does India have daylight saving time?

No. As of October 2026 India keeps UTC+5:30 all year, and the time zone data shows no change to Kolkata's offset in 2026 or 2027. That is why the gap with the US changes: only the US side moves.

Is IST the same as Irish Standard Time or Israel Standard Time?

No. The letters are shared by three zones: India Standard Time (UTC+5:30), Irish Standard Time (UTC+1) and Israel Standard Time (UTC+2). On July 15, 2026, a "10:00 IST" meeting would be 4 hours 30 minutes off if one side meant India and the other Ireland, so confirm the city when a time comes from outside India.
