What is an online stopwatch?
An online stopwatch measures elapsed time from the moment you press Start, counting up in minutes, seconds and hundredths of a second. Timelive’s stopwatch records lap times, keeps counting when you switch tabs or reload the page, and works on any phone, tablet or computer. There is no app to install.
How to use the stopwatch
- Press Start. Click Start or press the space bar. The display counts up in minutes, seconds and hundredths of a second.
- Record laps. Press Lap or the L key to mark a lap without stopping the clock. Each lap shows its own time and the overall time; the fastest lap turns green and the slowest red.
- Stop, resume or reset. Press Stop or the space bar to pause, Start again to resume, and Reset or the R key to clear the stopwatch and the laps.
- Copy your results. Use Copy laps to paste every lap time into a note or a spreadsheet.
Stopwatch questions
How accurate is this online stopwatch?
The elapsed time is read from your device’s high-resolution clock, so the measurement itself is typically accurate to within a millisecond. The display shows hundredths of a second and refreshes with your screen. In practice, accuracy is limited by how quickly you press the button, usually a tenth of a second or more.
Does the stopwatch keep running if I switch tabs or lock my phone?
Yes. It works out the elapsed time from the clock instead of counting frames, so it stays correct while the tab is in the background. If you reload or reopen the page in the same browser, a running stopwatch picks up where it left off.
What is the difference between lap time and overall time?
A lap time is how long that lap took. The overall time is the total elapsed time at the moment you pressed Lap. Timelive shows both, and highlights your fastest and slowest laps.
What are the keyboard shortcuts?
Press the space bar to start or stop, L to record a lap and R to reset.
Is the stopwatch free, and do I need to install anything?
It is free, has no ads and runs in your browser on any phone, tablet or computer. Nothing to install.
